Fishers Island is an 9-mile long island off the coast of Connecticut that is politically part of the Town of Southold in Suffolk County, New York.
The island was originally called Munnawtawkit by the Native American Pequot Nation that occupied portions of Connecticut and eastern Long Island. The island was originally named Vishers Island by Adrien Block, the first european to visit the island, in 1614. During the American Revolution, the island was a popular target of British raiding forces collecting supplies in the Long Island Sound. A terrible hurricane in 1815 destroyed most of the natural tree-cover on the island, and it wasn’t until another great, but much less severe storm in 1938, blew new seeds that established lasting foliage on the island.
According to the 2010 census, the population of Fishers Island is 236. The median household income is $65,833.
